I still remember plugging my first EV into a regular 120V outlet and waiting nearly two full days for a full charge. That frustration is exactly why I started testing the best level 2 EV chargers available today. A Level 2 charger runs on a 240V circuit (the same kind your electric dryer uses) and … Read more
Slides you made yourself rarely look as clean as the professionally mounted ones you’ll find in a kit. After testing several collections with my own kids and a classroom set, I learned that the best prepared microscope slide sets save hours of frustration and put real specimens under the lens in seconds. Our team compared … Read more
If you have ever aimed your telescope at Jupiter and walked away disappointed because the planet looked like a tiny cream-colored marble, you are not alone. I spent my first six months of planetary observation wondering what seasoned astronomers were seeing that I was missing. The answer turned out to be one of the most … Read more
I’ve spent the last three years testing equatorial telescope mounts from my backyard observatory, and I can tell you the mount is the single most important piece of gear in any astrophotography setup. A great telescope on a shaky mount produces blurry, trailed images. A modest telescope on a solid equatorial mount produces gallery-worthy shots … Read more
I’ve been doing backyard astronomy for over a decade, and the single biggest upgrade that changed my views wasn’t a new telescope or fancier eyepiece. It was a stable tripod. After watching my first telescope wobble every time I touched the focuser, I learned the hard way that the best telescope tripods are the foundation … Read more
I learned the hard way that telescopes and car trunks don’t mix. After watching my 8-inch reflector slide across the back seat during a sudden stop, I went searching for the best telescope cases and carrying bags. The good news is that the market has matured a lot in the last few years, and there … Read more
If you have ever looked through a telescope and felt underwhelmed by the view, the problem might not be your scope. The best telescope eyepieces can transform the same instrument from a soft, narrow view into a sharp, immersive window onto the sky. I have spent the last two months testing ten different eyepiece kits … Read more
When I first pointed my Dobsonian at Jupiter, all I saw was a bright blob with two tiny dots beside it. Saturn was a fuzzy oval. The problem was not the telescope. It was the eyepiece. A good planetary eyepiece is the single biggest upgrade you can make after the scope itself, and after spending … Read more
I remember the first time I tried to split a tight double star with my starter scope, the image swam and broke apart the moment I pushed the magnification. Adding a Barlow lens fixed that overnight, and I’ve been hooked on these compact optical multipliers ever since. A Barlow lens is one of the most … Read more
Walking out on a clear night and pointing a telescope at the moon is one of the most accessible thrills in astronomy. You can do it from a backyard, a balcony, or a campsite, and the moon is bright enough that you don’t need dark skies to see details like craters, mountain ranges, and the … Read more
