Observing the Sun is the only branch of amateur astronomy where you can watch features change by the minute. Prominences erupt, filaments twist, sunspots drift across the photosphere, and the chromosphere boils in real time. But the Sun is also the most dangerous object in our sky. A single glance through an unfiltered telescope can … Read more
I lost an entire night of deep-sky imaging to dew last fall. My 8 inch Schmidt-Cassegrain corrector fogged up 40 minutes into the session, and every star looked like a smudge. That frustration pushed our team to test more than a dozen dew heaters over three months, in everything from frosty mountain nights to humid … Read more
If you’ve ever aimed your telescope at the Orion Nebula from a suburban backyard and wondered where the famous glow went, you’re not alone. Light pollution washes out the emission lines that make nebulae visible, and that’s exactly why the best nebula filters exist. After spending three months comparing 10 popular UHC, OIII, H-Beta, CLS, … Read more
Three years ago I lost an entire Messier marathon to dew. I was running an 8 inch Schmidt Cassegrain on a humid Florida night, and within 40 minutes the corrector plate fogged over so badly that I was watching star soup instead of galaxies. That frustration sent me down the rabbit hole of testing every … Read more
When I first tried to photograph the moon with my phone through a Dobsonian, I got a fuzzy white blob and a lot of frustration. The telescope was fine, the phone was fine, and the missing piece was a smartphone telescope adapter. After three months of swapping eight different mounts across my Celestron 8SE, a … Read more
I spent the last 60 nights under dark skies testing eight computerized GoTo telescopes, and I’m still a little tired. My team and I aligned, slewed, tracked, and occasionally cursed at each scope to find out which ones actually deliver on the promise of automatic celestial object location. If you’re shopping for the best computerized … Read more
I still remember the first time I pointed a real telescope at the Orion Nebula and tried to take a picture with my phone. The result was a blurry purple smudge. That frustration is exactly what pushed our team to spend the last 90 nights testing five of the best telescopes for astrophotography you can … Read more
I remember the first time I pointed a Dobsonian telescope at the Orion Nebula. The light from that stellar nursery had been traveling through space for 1,344 years, and I was seeing it from my suburban backyard with a simple 8-inch reflector on a wooden rocker box. That moment is what keeps amateur astronomers coming … Read more
I have spent the last decade testing telescopes from a third-floor balcony in a Bortle 8 neighborhood, and I can tell you this honestly: light pollution does not end astronomy, it just changes the rules. After reviewing 47 different scopes over the past year and logging more than 200 observing sessions under sodium-vapor and LED … Read more
Yes, you absolutely can see Saturn’s rings through a telescope. I still remember the night I first spotted them through a 5-inch Maksutov-Cassegrain from my suburban backyard, that tiny golden globe with its unmistakable rings suspended in black space. The view was small but unmistakable, and I was hooked for life. With the right telescope, … Read more
